Department of Forensic Medicine
The Department of Forensic Medicine at the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences is headed by Professor      . Dr. Udit B. Das, M.D (Forensic Medicine). Dip ARD, who is ably supported by team of Forensic experts.

The Forensic Department at PIMS trains medical students in all aspects of Forensic Medicine including Toxicology and proper medicolegal documentation. The Department imparts enough knowledge to our medical students that they are confident to tackle all kinds of medicolegal problems as well as medico- legal autopsies.

This is the only private institution in the state of Puducherry recognized by the state government for performing autopsies since 2003. The Department performs around 200 autopsies a year in addition to various crime scene visits and exhumations. These numbers are expected to increase in the coming years as the Department has carved a niche for itself as a high quality performance-oriented department second only to none in the entire union territory and neighboring districts of Tamil Nadu.

Regular autopsies are conducted in a neat, well equipped mortuary complex which rivals with the best in the country. Autopsies of decomposed bodies are performed regularly in a well equipped open mortuary. Recently started Toxicology lab does testing for THC (Tetra hydro cannabinol) and will include testing for more poisons and drugs in the coming years.

The Department provides facilities for Embalming (Chemical preservation facilities) of dead bodies. It also has one of its kind unique cold storage facilities to preserve the dead bodies that no other medical colleges or a center in the state can boast of.

The Department has the distinction of having cent percent pass results in all the university examinations conducted till date with one third of the students securing distinction marks in the subject each time.

The Department has an excellent Forensic Museum comprising of hundreds of specimens, photographs, weapons, several poisons of biological and chemical origins and numerous charts. Museum serves the dual purpose of being an effective educational tool for the students as well as for the public to understand the subject and functions of the department. A well equipped student’s lab and a departmental library stocked with books of authors of national and international repute and up-to-date hard cover bound journals enable the students to hone their skills.

The Department is involved in conducting workshops for the medical and non-medical fraternity. The faculty members are called as resource persons for various medico-legal events. The Department has extended its autopsy and embalming services to individuals of other nationality and certificates issued by the department has been approved by various foreign countries for expatriation purposes. Research works conducted by the faculties in the department have been published in various national and international journals.
