Department of Nephrology

The department of Nephrology began in the year 2002 August under the leadership of Dr. Georgi Abraham. Dr. Jayant Thomas Mathew was our first nephrologist and he began the OPD as well as inpatient program. As there was no specific area allocated for the hemodialysis unit a portion in the 2nd floor of the OPD block was allocated for the unit and work began on the hemodialysis unit in January 2003.

PIMS dialysis centre started functioning on the 28th of February 2003. Our first machine was a TORAY 321 hemodialysis machine. The first patient Mr. Durai was taken for an emergency ultra filtration for severe pulmonary edema. In March 2003 two more new state of the art Nikisso DBB 26 machines were added. In November 2003 with the view to help economically weaker hemodialysis patients a tie-up was made with Tanker Foundation Chennai who donated one Tina Baxter Hemodialysis machine for that purpose. The department has come a long way since then with 11 working machines we treat over 500 patients on HD and till date we have done over 55,000 treatments

We offer the following professional services,

1. OPD services twice weekly (Tuesday & Friday)
2. Regular Hemodialysis 3 shifts 6 days a week
3. Emergency hemodialysis in ICU setting
4. Plasmapheresis
5. CAPD & Transplant OPD ( Wednesday)
6. Kidney transplantation ( Live & Cadaver)
7. Kidney disease awareness talks & camps

Milestones

1. First HD 29/02/2003
2. First CAPD 18/03/2003
3. First critical care HD 04/11/2005
4. First Plasmapheresis 08/04/2006
5. First Kidney transplant 23/04/2013
6. First Cadaver transplant (Two) 10/07/2015

PIMS Nephrology unit is the first hospital in India to use Ozone in disinfecting the dialysis RO water line from its inception in 2003. This method has saved time and money in the maintenance of the water loop in dialysis from bacterial and viral contamination.

A mobile RO water treatment plant, was put into service to treat patients in the ICU or ward when patients could not be moved to the main unit. This was a first of a kind in our country and was used successfully to treat patients requiring critical care
