Year of establishment: 2002

Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous system . Neurology Department caters to around 700 patients per month of varied neurological problems.

Main Professional services rendered are: Outpatients, inpatients as well as cross referrals from the intensive care units and other departments and the health centres.

The subspecialities in Neurology deal with

Neurophysiology services – Which Assess Video EEG,Nerve conduction studies, Evoked potentials and electromyography.

• Electrophysiology laboratory services are available on all working days of the week. Nerve conduction studies and Electromyogram (EMG) are special tests being done to assess patients with nerve and muscle diseases.

• Video EEG including portable EEG is done to evaluate patients having seizures.

• Evoked potentials of visual, brainstem auditory & Somatosensory are done to evaluate patients with demyelinating disorders.

• Sleep studies are also being done to evaluate patients with parasomnias, dyssomnias and sleep apnoea along with the help of the sleep lab being coordinated with the Physiology and Pulmonary Medicine Departments. Both in patient and out patient care is being given in a comprehensive way to all neurology patients.

• Plans to establish Neurosonology, Optical coherence tomography and Autonomic function laboratory as well as continuous ambulatory video EEG services are being planned in which post graduate research programmes can be undertaken.

Special camps for all Neurological complaints- screening for stroke risk, epilepsy, Neuropathy at Distant villages like Neyveli, Thiruvanamalai, vellankanni, Virudhachalam. Exclusive camps at PIMS for sleep disorder, epilepsy , dementia, stroke were conducted at various dates in the past 5 years.

 Conducted in Camps in our department:
• Stoke Awareness week : October 25th to 29th 2010
• Epilepsy Camp on National Epilepsy Camp 17th November 2010
• Sleep awareness week – (Sleep center): March 28th to April 1st 2011
• Epilepsy camp – Children & adults - June 6th to 10th 2011.
• School awareness programme on 23rd August 2011, for classes 8th std to 12th std. Departments of  Neurology, Paediatrics and Psychiatry would do a school awareness programme in the following schools.

1. 23.08.2011 – Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Ganapathychettikulam, Kalapet.
2. 19.08.2011 – Govt. Girls Hr. Sec. School, Sulthanpet
3. 25.08.2011- Govt. Girls School, Periyakalapet
4. 26.08.2011 - PONCOS hr. Sec. School, Lingareddipalayam

• World Stroke Day - October 29th 2015
o Educational Visit to
 Girls School, Kalapet
 Nursing College, Pondicherry
o Old age house visits to 2 houses in Pondicherry
• Velankani camp 25 & 26th April 2015
• Karaikal 17th and 18th October 2015
• Training programme for NIHSS (NIH stroke scale) and MRS (Modified Rankin Scale) for the consultants, residents, nursing and paramedical staff involved in acute stroke care. The programme is part of our World Stroke day programme. The target audience is medicine/emergency junior/senior residents/interns, medicine consultants, radiology residents, nursing/staff in emergency, ICU 1, ICU2 and CCU. We aim to conduct the training programme for two days (27th & 28th October 2016).

Presently paediatric neurology services including Neonatal EEG are available .

Research projects in collaboration with departments like Community medicine and other clinical departments are on the horizon.
