Department of Neurosurgery

The department of Neurosurgery at PIMS Hospital, Kalapet - is probably the best centre in the region, in the private sector, for tackling surgical disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves, both elective and trauma related. It has the requisite experienced man power to tackle all kinds of neurosurgical problems, along with the related basic specialties and Medical Neurology. The Neurosurgery OPD functions on all working days (Weekdays – 10 am to 4 pm / Saturdays – 10 am to 1 pm) and the emergency services are available round the clock.

The conditions which can be dealt with here are:

1. Congenital lesions of the brain & spine – 

    Hydrocephalus / Spinal & Cranial fusion defects;


2. Infections of the brain – Brain abscess & Post infective

    hydrocephalus;


3. Tumors of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves;


4. Neuro Vascular lesions – AVMs & Aneurysms / SAH


5. Stroke surgery – Evacuation of ICH / Decompression for

    Massive infarcts


6.Cervical & Lumbar degenerative lesions– Disc  prolapse and canal stenosis;  


7. Cranio Vertebral Anomalies;


8. Surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia – Micro Vascular     Decompression;


9. Peripheral Nerves – Schwannomas / Carpel Tunnel     Syndrome;


10. All kinds of head injuries, spinal injuries and      peripheral nerve injuries.

 

All the above is possible due to the availability of “ State of the Art “ facilities like:



1. Excellent Operative Rooms / Anesthetists & ICU /

    Ventilator facilities;


2. Availability of associated specialties like

 

    a.    Neuropathology (Frozen Section);

 

    b.    Medical Neurology  EEG / EMG / NCV )


    c.    Neuro-intensive Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation;


    d.   Neuro-radiology (64 slice CT with angio capability; 

        1.5 Tesla MRI, among others)


3. Carl Zeiss S 88 Microscope with diploscope and       assistant’s eye piece;


4. Electrical Drill system;


5. Head fixator system;


6. Neuro vascular instruments including aneurysm clips.



We have conducted an awareness program on the usefulness of helmets in the prevention of head injuries and are planning ones on Effects of drunken Driving and Epilepsy Do’s & Don’ts.
