Teaching

Both undergraduate and postgraduate teachings are carried out with classes for paramedical staff also.  These classes are made interesting with the latest teaching aids.  Hands on training are given, with each student having their own work station with their own microscopes.  Interactive discussions and integrated teaching approach make the students take active participation in the teaching - learning programme. Seminars and quizzes make even dry topics interesting.

Our main sections are:

  • Clinical Pathalogy-Hematology
  • Histopathology
  • Cytology
  • Transfusion Medicine

Clinical Pathalogy:

Ours is a high tech lab working round the clock with two acutomatic cell counters, Sysmex-five part and advia
3 part counters giving all the various blood parameters with scatter diagram.  All Routine hematology tests including specilised tests like Osmotic fragility, Sickling test, LE Cell, Cryoglobulins, Cold agglutinin, FDP and Cytochemical studies for Leukemia are done.  Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are done routinely.  Coagulation studies like a PTT, PT, Mixing studies, Urea solubility and Clot retraction test are a routine.  Infertility work-up, fluid studies are a part of the clinical pathology routine other than the routine urine tests and QBC and smear studies for malaria and filaria. We have both internal and external quality control programmes (AIMS and CMC, Vellore) to validate our reports.

Histopathology Section:

Routine sections with all the histochemical stains and polarizing studies are done.  Cryostat sectioning is done for rapid reporting of surgical cases within 20 minutes of receiving sample.

 Cytology:

Pap screening with fluid and brush cytology is a routine feature.  Fine needle aspiration is carried out in the department with rapid reporting of slides.  USG and CT Guided FNAC is also a common feature. Cytogenetic studies like Barr body studies are done.

Transfusion Medicine Department:

Ours is a state of the art department where we issue both whole blood and components.  Since we are on the ECR where accidents are a common affair, we help the clinicians handle the trauma cases efficiently.  Our blood bank issues Packed cells, Platelets and Fresh Frozen plasma.  For patients with coagulation disorders we have have cryoprecipitate.  There is maintenance of rare group registry, thereby making issuing of blood for such cases much easier.  We participate in a external quality control programme with CMC, Vellore for maintaining quality assurance.

Academic Activities:

Our faculties have publications in various international and national journals.  We regularly update our knowledge by having journal club meetings, attending conferences and CME.  Regular intercollegiate pathalogy club meetings are held with lively discussions with our peers from other colleges.

Museum:

Ours is one of the best pathalogy museums in this territory with over 512 mounted specimens. We have over 150 unmounted specimens which are useful for postgraduate teaching.  Catalogues are available for the students to get complete picture of each case.
