The department plays a key role in providing quality medical education and producing high quality public health professionals and community physicians. The department also strives to impart the ethical values to health professionals and constantly motivates the professionals to master the art of healing and explore the new frontiers of Medicine through committed research.

Community medicine is taught to undergraduate medical students from 1st to 7th semester. Students are trained by a team of qualified and dedicated faculty to make them understand the concept of health and its determinants, how to assess the community health problems, how to plan, implement and evaluate the community based health interventions. During the internship, they are posted in the primary health centres functioning under our department. Apart from regular theory and practical classes, there are clinical postings in which opportunities are provided to the students to practice community medicine.

The purpose of postgraduate education is to create specialist who would provide high quality healthcare and advance the cause of science through research & training. Thisthree-year course is designed in alignment with Pondicherry University (Central University) and NMC/ MCI, to create a cadre of professionals who are competent to meaningfully contribute their expertise in planning, implementation, co-ordination, monitoring, evaluation of Primary Healthcare Program based on scientific evidence and also covering wide skills viz., technical, managerial, administrative, organisational skills, applied skills, in Health Information Management software application and soft skills of communication, motivation, decision making, team building, training in scientific communication and medical writing. They are supervised at all times by faculty and knowledge is imparted by a continuous hands-on process.As a future Community Medicine specialist, one will inculcate a holistic view of health and medical interventions primarily focused on Community Health/ Population Health.
The resident is expected to make oral and power point presentations in the various topics assigned. These will be evaluated and feedback will be given during each session.Clinico- social case presentations, seminars, journal clubs, group discussions (WHO- Weekly Epidemiological Reports, Public Health Updates),periodic dissertation progress are done throughout the course.
In Departments of Emergency Medical Service, Dermatology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Microbiology and Pulmonary Medicine.
In the third semester, students are taken to the community where they learn about various community based organizations like panchayat raj, anganwadi centres etc. They are also introduced to the three tier health care delivery system especially at the primary health care level. Visits are organized to different types of community (rural villages, urban slums, etc) to make the students understand about the various determinants of health.
During this posing, students are allotted two families for a period of two weeks. They learn about the socio-demography characteristics, environmental, nutritional aspects and health status of the family. They identify the problems with respect to the above parameters and analyze the causes of such problems. Under the guidance of faculty, they plan and implement interventions to solve the identified problems.
Common public health problems like tuberculosis, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, antenatal woman, postnatal woman, child malnutrition etc are taught to the students. They have to interview and examine the individuals with the above conditions in the community. They have to identify the condition/diagnosis, assess the possible causes/risk factors and suggest interventions for the management of the conditions.
Students are posted under the Department of Community Medicine for one month during this posting. They are divided into four groups. Each group is allotted a particular research topic based on the common public health problems identified in our field practice areas. Under the guidance of the faculty, the protocols are prepared with specific objectives and details of materials and methods by the students. Students collect the data from the community by house to house survey. They are trained to enter and analyze the data. Based on the results, a community diagnosis is made. At the end of the posting, interventions are done according to the findings of the research. Finally, they have to submit a detail report of the ROME posting. During this posting, they are trained about how to conduct community based research and to plan and execute community based health interventions.
Department of Community Medicine of PIMS established along with other basic departments during 2002. There are six Health Centre functioning now actively, covering both Urban and Rural population in an around Pondicherry full-fledged medical care and Preventive Health Care been extended from the centres.

The PIMS Urban Health Centre is functioning in Krishna nagar, Lawspet, which is located 14 kms away from the PIMS hospital. The health centre functions from 7am to 9pm. Basic medical and surgical treatment facilities, medical consultation and laboratory services are available at the centre. Special services such as dental and physiotherapy are also available from 8 am - 4.30 pm. It also provides pharmacy and ambulance services.
The field practice areas covered under the urban health centre are Muthialpet, Pakkamudayanpet and Narikuravar colony (tribal area). Around 3102 families are covered which consists of population around 12,164. Each family is visited once in three months by regular house to house visits by the field staff (ANM and MSWs) and during the house visits, individual family folders are updated and their health conditions are monitored. Free medical camps have been conducted in the community by providing services and health education are given using IEC materials like charts and banners.
Project Sneham: On October 2nd 2012, "Project Sneham" was launched by the Department of Community Medicine focusing on promoting the health of the nomadic tribe (Narikuravars) through Behaviour Change Communication (BCC), who are residing in Narikuravar colony near Lawspet. The colony consisting of 68 families, population of about 292. Weekly visits are made by the faculty along with Interns and field staffs for delivering health care services and improving their overall community health.
A Community Based Surveillance for Dengue/ DSS funded by DBT/BIRAC's National Biopharma Mission (2019-2022), has been conducted in the field practice area of the Urban Health Centre, PIMS.
Interns and postgraduates posted in urban health centre are given first hand learning experience about community health assessment, community health interventions, national health programmes, health care delivery system and clinical skills etc. Apart from them, training is also provided for B.Sc medical sociology and MSW students from colleges of Kerala, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical Universities are posted in Urban Health Centre.
It was established during 2002 and situated around 30kms away from PIMS. The Hospital is built on 5acre land in the village Chunampet in Chengalpet district, Tamil Nadu. The centre covers a population of 1 lakh for general services and 30,000 population for active services. We have adopted 6500 families in the nearby villages for this purpose. The hospital is having 10 beds, X-ray facilities, lab investigation facilities and ambulance services with 24 hours emergency care. The women and children are given priority care during daily health visits by the health workers, medical interns and monthly visit by the medical officers. Specialists from Paediatrics and Obstetrics &Gynaecology department of PIMS visit the centre every week. Regular free health camps, health education sessions, free health check-up of vulnerable population and school health programmes are organized in these villages We also collaborate with the Government Primary Health Centre in delivering the services related to National Health Programmes such as immunization, antenatal and NCD clinics.
With the generous donation from MalayalaManorama, a two storey Community Health and Rural Training Hall has been built within the RHTC - Chunampet campus. Many community health and rural developments programmes have been conducted in this hall including Medical Camps, Healthy Baby Show, World Health Day, School Health Programmes, Medical Exhibition etc.
Community Health and Information Management System (CHIMS)
The centre is continuously collecting and maintaining the records of family and individuals residing in the field practice area since 2002. These records were computerized since 2014 and named as CHIMS. Data were entered with the help of EPIDATA software. Each individual was assigned an eleven-digit UID (Unique Identification Number) which is mandatory while collecting data. Social mapping of villages was also done and house numbers were interlinked with UID. By this method, each individual can be easily identified for collecting any information, conducting research or for further intervention.
The health centre was established in the year 2006 along the ECR road in the Anichankuppam village of Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu, about 5 kms from PIMS hospital. It is a 10 bedded hospital which is manned by a team of 14 staff members who work in two shifts. The health centre provides promotive, preventive and curative services to a population of about 10000 residing in 12 villages of the Marakkanam block. The hospital services provided by the health centre include emergency medical treatment, medical consultation, minor surgical treatment, pharmacy, laboratory services and dental consultation. The health centre also has one of its kind Herbal garden with about 30 herbs and plants with varied medicinal properties.
The community services which is rendered in the nearby villages of the Marakkanam block includes Maternal and child health services, provision of medicines for minor ailments, health education, drinking water quality analysis, referral services and non-communicable disease management. The community outreach services are provided by the field health staff on a daily basis and periodical visit by Medical Officer. Once a month free medical camp is organized in the field practice area where free consultation and medicines are provided and necessary referral to higher medical centres is done. Community based academic activities happen periodically in the field practice area which caters to the learning and training of both undergraduate and postgraduate medical and nursing students.
The health centre also houses the main office of the DHS/ Demographic Developmental Environmental Surveillance Site (DDESS) of PIMS established under the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India.
Kalapet Health centre is 2kms away from PIMS. Primary Health centre of Government of Pondicherry has MoU for Round the clock services by the department of Government of Pondicherry. Our Doctors, Pharmacists and staff nurses along with Lab technician and Health workers are working in the centres to provide medical cover Emergency services for the nearby community.
MuthialpetHealth centre is 15 kms away from PIMS. Primary Health centre of Government of Pondicherry has MoU for Round the clock services by the department of Government of Pondicherry. Our Doctors, Pharmacists and staff nurses along with Lab technician and Health workers are working in the centres to provide medical cover Emergency services for the nearby community.
As per the request by Government of Puducherry, the subcentre at Alankuppam was taken over by Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences in February 2015 to run the morning shift from 8AM to 2 PM. AlankuppamSubcenter is about 15 Kms from PIMS serving approximately 5000 population. Medical Officer is posted to provide the basic medical services to the patients attending the health centre. Post Graduates &interns are posted here to learn about the functioning of Government PHCs and the implementation of various National Health Programmes.
The department is involved in running this clinic aimed to promote health education among the patients (patient's attenders), staffs and students of PIMS. The annual health check-up of the PIMS staff is being done through this clinic. The contact tracing activities of the sputum positive TB patients and COVID-19 patients admitted at PIMS is another important activity undertaken.

The Annual Puducherry State Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) Puducherry State Chapter – IAPSMPYCON 2023 was organized by the Department of Community Medicine, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on 17th November 2023 to 18th November 2023. Around 180 delegates comprising of faculty, post graduate and undergraduate students of Community Medicine from more than 30 medical colleges across Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat had attended the conference. In an effort to address the rising global health concern of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) the IAPSMPYCON 2023, themed "Conquering the Silent Epidemic of Non-Communicable Diseases". It served as a platform for experts, practitioners, and enthusiasts to delve into the multifaceted aspects of NCDs. The event showcased a diverse range of sessions, including plenaries by experts, engaging art and short video conferences, and a walkathon aimed at raising awareness about the silent yet pervasive threat of NCDs. The pre-conference workshop on “Screening and Diagnostic Tests in Biomedical Research” was conducted on 16th November 2023. Hands on session on calculating tests for diagnostic accuracy using JAMOVI software were given to all participants. The general body meeting was held on 17.11.23 between 5 to 6 PM.
