Field visits

In the third semester, students are taken to the community where they learn about various community based organizations like panchayat raj, anganwadi centres etc. They are also introduced to the three tier health care delivery system especially at the primary health care level. Visits are organized to different types of community (rural villages, urban slums, etc) to make the students understand about the various determinants of health.

Family study

During this posing, students are allotted two families for a period of two weeks. They learn about the socio-demography characteristics, environmental, nutritional aspects and health status of the family. They identify the problems with respect to the above parameters and analyze the causes of such problems. Under the guidance of faculty, they plan and implement interventions to solve the identified problems.

Clinico-Social Case Review

Common public health problems like tuberculosis, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, antenatal woman, postnatal woman, child malnutrition etc are taught to the students. They have to interview and examine the individuals with the above conditions in the community. They have to identify the condition/diagnosis, assess the possible causes/risk factors and suggest interventions for the management of the conditions.

ROME (Re-Orientation of Medical Education) Posting

Students are posted under the Department of Community Medicine for one month during this posting. They are divided into four groups. Each group is allotted a particular research topic based on the common public health problems identified in our field practice areas. Under the guidance of the faculty, the protocols are prepared with specific objectives and details of materials and methods by the students. Students collect the data from the community by house to house survey. They are trained to enter and analyze the data. Based on the results, a community diagnosis is made. At the end of the posting, interventions are done according to the findings of the research. Finally, they have to submit a detail report of the ROME posting. During this posting, they are trained about how to conduct community based research and to plan and execute community based health interventions.
