Department of Biochemistry

The Department of Biochemistry was started in the year 2002. The Department of Biochemistry has 2 blocks

The Academic block

The Academic block of the Department is involved in teaching of MBBS, BSc Nursing and Post BSc Nursing students. The department is backed by a committed group of teachers who have adopted new teaching methodologies and clinically oriented lectures to make the subject interesting and prepare the students for their future clinical years. The students are also encouraged to take up short research projects. The department is also involved in guiding MD Biochemistry students. MD Biochemistry course was started in the year 2009.

The Diagnostic block

The Diagnostic block of the Department is a NABL Accredited High tech Laboratory catering to the needs of the institution and community at the large. The Professionally managed and technology driven laboratory has progressed by leaps and bounds to provide a wide array of tests catering to the needs of the Institution and surrounding community. Established infra structure and state of the art equipment have helped speedy processing of samples and accurate reporting. A highly qualified team of professionals and technologists working round the clock ensure samples are processed every day. Quality reports are ensured by performing internal quality control and participating in external quality control programs. Two-level validation of each test ensures accurate reporting.

The Department handles over 1800 tests per day. The following tests are performed. Routine Chemistry, Electrolytes, Blood Gas Analysis, Lipid Profile, Liver Profile, Cardiac Markers, Pancreatic Profile, Diabetic Profile, Thyroid Profile, Fertility Profile, Immuno Chemistry, Complement Assays, Procalcitonin, Tumor Markers, Bone Markers, Prostatic Profile, Anaemia Profile, Vitamins, Renal Profile, CSF analysis, Ascitic Fluid analysis, Pleural Fluid analysis.

Research:

Apart from intra and inter-departmental projects, the department also offers its laboratory facilities expertise and guidance to students carrying out their MD research projects. Biochemistry faculty have publications in indexed journals and they have presented their research work in national and international conferences.

Research Interests and Key Publications:
Dr. Ramachandran Thiruvengadam’s research focuses on reducing adverse pregnancy outcomes through public health interventions. He, as a member of the interdisciplinary Group for Advanced Research on Birth Outcomes – DBT India Initiative (GARBHINI) program, leads clinical and epidemiological studies to identify multidimensional risk factors for preterm birth and fetal growth restriction. His work combines classical epidemiology with modern data science, developing population-specific models and tools driven by artificial intelligence and machine learning. He also explores the impact of environmental factors on pregnancy. Dr. Thiruvengadam has contributed significantly to clinical and translational immunology, especially in understanding COVID-19's implications on pregnancy and vaccine effectiveness.
