Department of Pharmacology

The Department of Pharmacology was started at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences in 2002. The Department was developed by Dr. Venkatadri N as head followed by Dr. Ratinder Jhaj,Dr. JR Vijayalakshmi and Dr. Balakrishnan. Each one contributed their knowledge, skills and experience gained from JIPMER, PGI Chandigarh, MMC Madurai.

The Department is recognized for MBBS course, MD Pharmacology and B.Sc.-Nursing.Presently, the department is headed by Dr. Isabella Topno and well supported by Dr. AC Jesudoss Prabhakaran and Dr. Manjunatha CH.

Goal

To produce competent doctors with proficiency in prescribing drugs and good communication skills for optimum and rational use of drugs. To help students to acquire scientific and basic skills in teaching of the medical and paramedical professionals.

Vision

To impart medical graduate the knowledge and practice of rational drug therapy and to promote the safest use of medicines among health care workers through Pharmacovigilance.

Courses Conducted

MBBS

The department follows NMC guidelines and takes initiative to introduce innovative approach for UG trainingand integrated teaching. Involve the students in interactive and skill-based training. Students’ participation in seminars, peer teaching, quizzes, academic competitions, group discussions and research activities boost their 360-degree learning ability. Mentorship programs and feedback sessions provide a platform to resolve personal issues.

MD Pharmacology

The department aspires to provide the students awider aspect of Pharmacology by collaborating with industry as well as opportunities to participate in various academic as well as other curricular activities. Exposure of students to various academic domains like workshops, group discussions, seminars, CMEs, research and publication to produce independent individuals. The department thrives to create a home away from home environment. The department is proud to see alumni from pharmacology having successful and settled career.

B.Sc. Nursing

The department also trainsnursing students and equips them with adequate knowledge about Pharmacology to make them competent healthcare professionals who can efficiently deliver their nursing duties.

Research areas Involved:

Collaborative projectshave significantly contributed to the development of skills and knowledge of the students. Guidance by enthusiastic and motivated faculty have presented the research/thesis work in various national/international conferences and have received various awards. Involvement by faculty in research is stimulus for post-graduates and undergraduates.

Units

  • AnAdverse Reaction Monitoring center established in 2014 and approved by PvPI in 2016, has enabled the institution to make footprints in the map of Pharmacovigilance program of India. Takes responsibility to spread the awareness and encourage ADR reporting.
  • CCSEA registered Central animal house/animal hold area and well-equipped laboratory manned by full time veterinarian for post graduate training and research.
