Department Of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology of PIMS was started in 2002 under the leadership of able prolific, dedicated and experienced doctors at Pondicherry, the French colonial marvel of south Asia in an eco friendly environment. It caters to population of the east coast of India, south wards from Chennai till the South and East India, with the unique code of mission, “To Reach The Unreached” bringing world class service at the door step of poor and rich on par.

PIMS Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Safe, ethical and patient-first policy are the basic principles of the Department. The ambience and affordability are unique features. The strength of the Department is the faculty who are friendly, considerate, with empathetic approach, more health oriented and prevention of disease. Round the clock availability of blood bank, anaesthesia and radiological hematology and lab services accredited NABL give good support for multidisciplinary care. Less invasive methods for managing heavy menstrual bleeding and fibroid uterus is available in the Department. Active research on several women health issues and academic activities are hallmarks of the Department activities in addition to patient care.

Obstetrics

  • Maternity care services – high risk pregnancy care are offered and co-morbidities are taken care at the high dependency unit. Intensive care unit with ventilator support and multi disciplinary approach makes pregnancy safe for high risk pregnancy with complication and surgical cases.
  • Painless labour with epidural analgesia is available at request.
  • Availability of delivery suite (special labour room) with following facilities
    • Spacious room and centralised air conditioning system all through
    • Electronic cot with remote control
    • Attached bathroom and toilet with heater
    • Attender (Doula) facilities to stay on with permission from the treating consultant in charge
    • Music facility
    • Baby resuscitation facilities in room
    • Procedures attended by Consultant/Senior Residents
  • Expert nursing care is provided by trained nurses and faculty of nursing

Emergency Obstetrics service offered

Round the clock in patient services are provided by consultant and residents All emergencies like

  • PPH and uterine artery embolisation
  • Rupture uterus
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Septic abortion
  • Twisted ovarian tumour or other surgical emergencies

Medical management of ectopic pregnancy is offered.

Maternal Fetal Medicine:

Emerging perinatology service or maternal fetal medicine to provide better fetal outcome is practiced.

Fetal clinic service which caters to prenatal counseling, to the would-be parents for prenatally detected fetal abnormalities that pose risks where surgical guidance, prognosis, disability prevention advice by joint multidisciplinary team with counseling report that can be carried by the parents for further management if required and follow up by the concerned specialist.

  • First trimester screening (anomaly detection)

Fetal therapy

for Rh isoimmunised pregnancy which includes non-invasive USG monitoring and intrauterine transfusion therapy

• The support of dedicated neonatal services of the neonatologist and the Paediatric surgery team is the special boon. Preterm babies and growth restricted small babies found patronage under the neonatal unit thus providing awesome health shelter at their early blossoming stage of life along with the team. Thus the much longed procreative desire of many couples being fulfilled.

Genetic workup

for women with bad obstetrics history abnormal babies (congenital anomalies) and primary amenorrhoea is being provided by joint care with genetists. Karyotyping, single gene defects can be identified and reported under one roof for Holistic care.

Gynaecology

Ambulatory care for Menorrhagia patients, and day care procedures. Elective and emergency cases are regularly performed

  • Gynaecology related endoscopy services are offered at very reasonable cost to all category of patient there by providing early recovery and less pain from major gynaecology surgeries.
  • Urogynaecological problems of women, complex pelvic floor repair surgeries are performed with utmost care.

Gynaecology Oncology

Preventive Oncology – Cancer prevention by screening for cancer cervix and breast are undertaken with includes Pap smear, HPV testing, coloposcopy, mammography (USD, MRI& CT) and tumor markers cancer prevention vaccine for cervix is available.

Family Planning

Family welfare services, lap sterilisationsm vasectomy, MTP service, LNGS/IUCD insertion, contraceptive counseling, undertaken and it has been approved by the Government welfare schemes with insurance.

Subfertility

Hospital also offers infertility services to women desirous of pregnancy. The Department has an IUI lab, being upgraded and provides low cost infertility service to women who are unable to spend for costly Artificial Reproductive Techniques(ART), in co ordination with the Institute of Reproductive Medicine (a unit of Madras Medical Mission)

Uterine artery embolization

We are also the pioneers and one of the very few centers even today which offers uterine artery embolization for management of uncontrolled postpartum haemorrhage due to whatever reason (be it of uterine origin, or secondary to maternal soft tissue) is provided by the Department.

Well Women Clinic

which cover the general gynaecological check up of the women is offered by consultants

Outreach Programmes

– Health care to patients near and far villages around the Institute is covered which would be in line with our motto.

Besides this the Department is actively involved in the conduct of the following Government camps.
- Cervical cancer screening camp
- The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)camps

Courses & Training

Undergraduate (MBBS) Postgraduates(MD),Nursing - Phd, Junior Resident and Senior Residents by expert teaching faculty. Students are exposed and trained to variety of cases and learn to manage emergency obstetrics and gynaecology through their labour room, ward and outpatient department postings.

Research

Research projects on several women's health issues like genital tuberculosis, gestational diabetes mellitus, contraception, HPV deduction are being carried out which has got good recognitions as early pioneer studies by peer groups. Students are encouraged to take up research especially ICMR projects and take part in national level conferences, CME's and competitions besides their regular academics.
